SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 2, 2024--Trimble  announced today the winners of its 2024 Tekla® Global Building Information Modeling (BIM) Awards. In this biennial competition, the world's most impressive structural construction projects that use Tekla solutions, are judged in eight categories on criteria such as Use of BIM and Collaboration, Innovative Use of Tekla software, Constructibility, Environmental Benefits and Cool Factor.

International Competition

What started as a regional drawing contest in 1999, has grown into an internationally renowned competition. Teams from across the globe working on some of the world’s most challenging projects, compete on the basis of the best or most innovative use of BIM and digital technologies in structural engineering. Over 155 projects were entered in this year's competition, which included winners of regional Tekla BIM Awards from 35 countries.

“The Tekla Global BIM Awards celebrate the best in structural engineering and BIM,” said Jari Heino, Vice President and GM at Trimble. “Our Tekla software enables structural engineers the world over to push the envelope of design quality, functionality and sustainability. The exceptional quality of this year’s entries shows the progress that the Tekla community is making in furthering the impact of the structural engineering trade.”

Best BIM project: Kruunuvuori Bridge, Finland

The Kruunuvuori Bridge project will connect the districts of Laajasalo, Korkeasaari, and Kalasatama to Hakaniemi in 2027. At the same time, a new maritime route for tram traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians will be created. The project's goal is to provide the growing Laajasalo with a smooth and reliable public transport connection to the city center. The Kruunuvuori Bridge is a unique bridge for tram and light traffic. Upon completion, it will be Finland's longest bridge, nearly 1,2 kilometers long, and the world's largest bridge, excluding car traffic. Structurally very significant, the cable-stayed bridge's substructures will be constructed as in-situ concrete deep underwater and the pylon will reach high (+135 m). The steel superstructure will be installed using launching and massive marine lift installations. The maritime environment presents very challenging conditions for construction.

Tekla 2022 Global BIM Awards Category Winners

Commercial project: Lyyra

The Lyyra project will build a whole new block in the city center on top of the metro station and tunnels. The hybrid project, which includes several different activities, has brought many different levels of detail to the coordination of the plans. The site will serve as offices, retail space, a hotel, and apartments. A particular feature of the project is the coordination with the existing metro facilities, which have a different operator than the other spaces in the building.

Public interest project: Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion

A 50,000-square-foot exhibit space featuring sharks, rays, and other animals and ecosystems from the tropical Pacific. Integrated city's elevated walkway, the structure's roof will be a public plaza with unimpeded views of the sunset and Mount Rainier. At ground level, a circular port called an oculus will allow passersby to peer into a 325,000-gallon coral canyon teeming with thousands of fish and invertebrates.

Industrial project: Brewery Roman

Brewery Roman in the Oudenaard borough of Mater is investing in a new brewery hall. The current hall dates back to 1927. Roman is the oldest family brewer in our nation and is known for the Gentse Strop and Ename beers. The expansion will allow them to produce almost double their output of beer, which will increase their annual capacity to 200,000 hectolitres. The new brewery hall is the culmination of a 15-million-euro investment project that will revamp the entire production line. The building plans are in the hands of the Oudsbergen construction company Mathieu Gijbels, which has offices in Deinze.

Sport and recreation: Al Hudayriyat Island - Velodrome, United Arab Emirates

The plot allocated for the Velodrome is at the centre of the West of the island and adjacent to an outdoor BMX track and cycle track. The mobility spine is integrated and run continuous between connection points. It is intended for Abu Dhabi to being classified as a UCI Bike City. Increasing sporting options will attract international cycling teams to Abu Dhabi and by building a UCI Category 1 Velodrome would also give Abu Dhabi the opportunity to host one of the six rounds of the annual UCI World Cycling Cup or UCI World Championships.

Small scale project: Te Veld modular homes, Netherlands

A neighborhood where nature is the basis and the houses are ‘only’ guests: that is what the Eindhovense Buurtschap Te Veld stands for. A leading project in which ‘movable’ timber construction homes are used as a fully-fledged part of the total housing supply.Barli realized various modular homes in the project, by varying the target group’s dimensions and appearance. In ‘Kamer A’, the prefab wood builder from Uden built 7 apartments with indoor storage, divided over two residential buildings.

Students project: The funicular shaped structure of the reinforced concrete hall with the arched girder of the main nave

This thesis aimed to find a practical shape for the central part of the structure based on graphic statics methods. The practical application of Robert Hooke's observation: "As hangs the flexible line, but inverted will stand the rigid arch," in combination with the funicular polygon, allowed me to find the optimum shape of a non-prismatic arch that adapts its geometry to the flow of forces in the structure so that the parabolic arch is mainly in compression. The arch girder is a key element of my thesis, but I also designed other elements of the hall, such as columns, beams, slabs, and footings. I encourage you to get acquainted with the attached files of my design.

Developer Project: Component Code Generator, United States

Component Code Generator accelerates the programming time for coding, building system configurators, and setting key variables by over 20% to 30%.This tool's key feature is its ability to read selected existing custom, system, or API plugin components from the Tekla Structures model and automatically generate a C# method to insert that component. It includes the input code and defines many of the attributes filled in on the selected instance of the code, making it a valuable asset for software developers.

Public vote: Preservation Plaza Canopy, USA

Among the longest operating amusement parks in the USA, historic Arnolds Park sought improvements that would create a new performance venue with accompanying amenities and expanded capacity, while preserving the view of the city’s signature West Lake Okoboji from the park’s open green space. The Historic Arnolds Park Incorporation (HAPI) desired to transform the area into a permanent event space. The green space frequented by lake goers for events was converted in to this Preservation Plaza Canopy that offers yet another unique experience to the charm and delight of the area and serves as a cornerstone anchoring the park for enjoyment by future generations.
